Southern Utah University (SUU) offers an MSN family nurse practitioner (FNP) program through the College of Health Sciences. Program coursework is online and students attend a one-week campus intensive for practical skills practice. As well, students complete clinical hours at local approved sites.
Students in the MSN-FNP program will gain expertise in nursing leadership, evidence-based nursing practice, information technology in healthcare, advanced pathophysiology and pharmacology, population care, health promotion, and primary care management and practices.
Family NPs may be prepared for nursing roles such as family nurse practitioner, nurse consultant, clinical research nurse, clinical nurse educator, public health nurse, or director of nursing.
The FNP program prepares graduates for patient-centered care, clinical research, advanced healthcare delivery, advanced leadership, ethical decision-making, health promotion and disease prevention. FNPs typically work in collaborative family care and public health care settings.
Upon graduation, family NP students are eligible to take their FNP certification exam through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). Southern Utah University is located in Cedar City, Utah, and is accredited by Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU).
What to Expect from Southern Utah University Online MSN-FNP Program
Admission Requirements: Applicants to the online MSN program must hold a BSN from a CCNE-, CNEA, or ACEN-accredited nursing program. A minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale is required. Applicants must have completed a statistics course with a grade of C or higher and have at least two years of work experience as an RN.
No GRE is required for admission to this program. Application materials include a completed graduate application, official transcripts, three professional references, and a personal statement. By the beginning of the first course, students must provide proof of a valid RN license, a successful background check, and an acceptable drug screen. An interview is required for admission.
State Restrictions: Southern Utah University accepts students from west of the Mississippi, excluding California. Restricted states and territories include Alabama, California, Connecticut, Washington DC, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Vermont, and Wyoming.
Study Plan: The 52-credit MSN-FNP program is offered on a full-time or part-time basis. Full-time students take six semester hours of coursework per semester. Courses last seven weeks each, and graduate students may take up to 13 credit hours per semester. The program may be completed in as few as 18 months. A one-week on-campus clinical intensive is required at the Cedar City SUU campus. Start dates land twice each in the fall, spring, and summer.
MSN-FNP students complete 680 preceptorship hours in addition to the one-week campus intensive. Graduate students must earn a grade of B or higher in each course to continue in the program.
MSN Core Curriculum: Courses for the MSN program include nursing leadership theory; evidence-based practice and nursing leadership; innovation and information in nursing leadership; advanced pathophysiology; advanced pharmacology; advanced health assessment; health promotion and population care for the MSN-FNP; primary care management: adult and women’s health; primary care management: pediatric and reproductive health; primary care management: special populations and genetics; adult primary care clinical I-II; pediatric and reproductive primary care clinical I-II; and FNP capstone project. An on-campus clinical intensive one-credit course is also included. MSN-FNP students complete 680 clinical practicum hours plus the one-week on-campus intensive.
Online Experience: SUU seeks to make online courses as close to in-person courses as possible. Courses are asynchronous and may include pre-recorded lectures and optional Zoom sessions in which students and faculty can meet virtually to ask and answer questions and communicate online in a face-to-face environment. As well, there may be readings, hands-on case studies, simulations, research, and videos for online learning. There are set deadlines for assignments and assessments. Otherwise, students may access the online materials at their convenience.
SUU uses Canvas as its online learning management system (LMS). In addition, Proctorio is utilized as a remote proctoring service when students are taking tests. The purpose of the campus intensives is to assess student nursing skills in preparation for the certification exams.
Online graduate student resources include both an online tutoring and writing center, an online library, an online speech and presentation center, financial aid services, Canvas resources, an online outreach team, mental health resources, disability services, technical support, and the SUU app in the app store.
On-Site Requirements: Southern Utah University requires a one-week on-campus intensive training in Cedar City, Utah. During this intensive, students will practice course-related skills such as physical assessment, simulation cases, patient care procedures, communication, wound management, and basic clinical office procedures.

SUU may offer scholarships and grants to graduate students. All applicants are encouraged to submit the FAFSA for approval of unsubsidized federal student loans. Some employers may offer a tuition reimbursement program or tuition discounts. Finally, SUU online graduate students may want to investigate outside funding options such as community and organizational scholarships, grants, and private loans.
