Meet the Expert: Nicole Miele, MSN, PMHNP-BC
Nicole Miele is a full-time senior lecturer at Regis College for the psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner program. Previously, she served as an adjunct faculty member at Boston College for their undergraduate and master’s entry programs. Miele received a BA degree in psychology from Rhode Island College, her BSN from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, a master’s in nursing leadership and health systems management from Drexel University, and a CAGS-PMHNP from Northeastern University.
In addition to teaching at Regis College, Miele works as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner in her private practice in Rhode Island. She specializes in women’s mental health and incorporates functional medicine, mindfulness-based practices, and nutritional psychiatry into her practice. She is a member of the Rhode Island Department of Health Maternal Health Data to Action Team.
She is a member of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association, Neuroscience Education Institute, PostPartum Support International, and the Institute for Functional Medicine.
NPSchools.com: What do you wish the public understood about online nurse practitioner programs in Massachusetts?
Miele: I wish the public understood that online nurse practitioner programs in Massachusetts are rigorous and credible pathways to becoming a nurse practitioner. They offer the same high-quality education as a traditional on-campus program, but with the added flexibility of online learning. These programs are accredited by reputable organizations and adhere to the same standards as their on-campus counterparts.
NPSchools.com: What advice would you give to aspiring online nurse practitioner program students?
Miele: I have been teaching for an online nurse practitioner program for six years. My advice to aspiring online nurse practitioner program students is to be prepared for a challenging but rewarding experience. Online learning requires self-discipline, time management skills, and a dedicated support system. Here are some recommendations to help you succeed in an online program:
- Choose an accredited program: Ensure the program you choose is accredited by a recognized organization, such as the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
- Be prepared to manage your time: Online learning requires strong time management skills. I recommend that my students schedule and plan time during the week to complete their coursework and study.
- Find a support system: Connect with other students, faculty, and mentors for support and guidance. Over the years, I have had students develop great friendships with the peers they met through their online program. As a faculty member, I can attest to being able to build the same rapport with students through an online program that I was able to have with teaching in-person.
- Be proactive: Do not be afraid to ask questions and seek help when you need it. Reach out for support sooner rather than later. As with an on-campus program, your faculty will be available to offer support and answer any questions you have. Online programs also offer the same academic support services that are available through an on-campus program.
- Take advantage of online resources: For example, utilize the online library, writing resources, or create a study group with your peers.
