Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) Online NP Programs

School Logo

Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) offers an MSN family nurse practitioner (MSN-FNP) program that requires two campus visits throughout the program. TAMIU also offers psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) post-master’s certificates for APRNs and non-APRNs, with one campus intensive required. Students in the PMHNP certificate programs must complete their clinical preceptorships at an approved facility in Texas.

Learning outcomes for the MSN-FNP and PMHNP certificate programs focus on knowledge, research, and theory, which are utilized to provide primary care and mental health care to patients across the lifespan. Students learn to be culturally sensitive to diverse populations within healthcare organizations and the community of patients and families; to use evidence-based practice to advance the nursing field; to operate from ethical perspectives, knowing and applying legal principles to practice; and to work toward improvement of health care quality through a commitment to lifelong learning and community service.

Graduates will possess an advanced set of marketable skills to apply to health care leadership, education, management, and patient care. These include critical analysis, implementation of current research, interprofessional collaboration, effective communication with patients, families, and peers, organizational management, advanced investigative skills, IT literacy, ethical literacy, and independent practice.

The FNP program prepares graduates to work with patients from diverse backgrounds in a culturally sensitive manner, assessing, diagnosing, and creating care plans for patients of all ages. FNPs work collaboratively and individually in primary care clinics, hospitals, school settings, public health centers, health clinics, and other medical entities.

The PMHNP program prepares graduates to assess patients, diagnose mental health issues, and provide psychotherapy and psychopharmacology care. PMHNPs may work collaboratively or individually in hospitals, mental health organizations, rehabilitation facilities, counseling centers, public health settings, and school settings to address the mental health needs of patients and their families.

Upon graduation, MSN-FNP students are eligible to take their FNP certification exam through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). PMHNP certificate graduates are eligible to take their PMHNP certification exam through the ANCC. The MSN-FNP program is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). TAMIU is located in Laredo, Texas, and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).

State Restrictions: TAMIU accepts students into the online MSN-FNP program from most states. Restricted states include California, Washington DC, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. The PMHNP certificate program can only be completed by students from Texas as the clinical preceptorship must be completed in Texas.

It is important for students outside of Texas to verify with the College of Nursing and Health Sciences to make sure they are eligible for the nursing NP programs. Additionally, prospective nursing students should contact the licensing board of their state of residence to determine if the program meets state requirements for NP licensure.

Study Plan: The MSN-FNP program can be completed in 36 months, while the PMHNP certificate for APRNS can be completed in one year. The PMHNP certificate program for non-APRNs can be completed in as few as 28 months. Start dates land once each in the fall and spring.

Courses last seven weeks each. Graduate students in the MSN-FNP program complete at least 585 hours of clinicals in approved states of study. APRNs in the PMHNP certificate program complete at least 765 clinical hours in Texas. Non-APRNs complete at least 900 clinical hours in Texas.

MSN-FNP Curriculum: Courses for the MSN-FNP program include Diagnostic reasoning and clinical procedures; advanced pathophysiology I-II; advanced pharmacology I-II; theories influencing practice, research, and advanced role; research methods and statistical analysis; healthcare informatics; healthcare policy and social justice; advanced health assessment theory plus practicum; primary care of adults, geriatrics, and family, plus practicum; primary care of pediatrics and families, plus practicum; primary care of adults and women’s health; and integrated family practicum. Online Experience: TAMIU utilizes Blackboard eLearn as its online learning management system (LMS). Courses are delivered asynchronously for maximum flexibility in learning. Campus visits are kept to a minimum and students complete clinical preceptorships for hands-on practice and experience. Courses may include simulations, case studies, research, readings, lectures, videos, discussion boards, and assessments.

Texas A&M International University participates in the Quality Matters program which continually reviews and improves courses for online delivery. Online graduate students have access to technical support, the Sue & Radcliffe Killam Library, writing help, tutoring, career counseling, mental health services, disability services, and veteran services

On-Site Requirements: Two MSN-FNP courses (diagnostic reasoning & clinical procedures and advanced health assessment practicum) require a one-day campus intensive on a Saturday or Sunday in Laredo, Texas. PMHNP students must attend a campus learning intensive at the end of the first semester.
