The College of Health Sciences School of Nursing through Texas Tech University (TTU) offers online Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and Post-Master’s Certificates with six advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) specializations:
- Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)
- Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (PNP-AC)
- Pediatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (PNP-PC)
- Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP)
- Nurse-Midwifery (NM)
- Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP)
Coursework is delivered 100% online with four to six campus visits depending on the path chosen. One visit is for orientation while the others are for objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs). Students also complete clinical preceptorships at approved facilities local to them. Both the location and preceptor must be approved by the School of Nursing.
Varying degree completion plans are offered depending on the specialization with full-time and part-time options. Courses are delivered asynchronously through the Blackboard Learning Management System (LMS). Graduates of each MSN specialization are eligible to take the corresponding national certification exam through the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB), Pediatric Nursing Certification Board (PNCB), American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN), and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP).
Texas Tech University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). The nursing programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). TTU is located in Lubbock, Texas.
What to Expect from the Texas Tech University Online Nursing Programs
Admission Requirements: MSN applicants must have a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) degree with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Prerequisites include undergraduate statistics and research with a grade of C or higher.
Post-Master’s Certificate applicants must have a master of science in nursing (MSN) degree and can first submit unofficial transcripts for evaluation to determine which courses can be transferred in and which must still be completed for the nursing program.
Each specialization has track specific essay questions as well as the following requirements:
- AGACNP – At least one year of acute care, emergency, or intensive care experience within the prior five years; Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification before entering population focus courses
- FNP – At least one year of RN experience; Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification before entering population-focus courses
- PNP-AC – At least two years of pediatric nursing experience in critical care, acute care, or emergency room settings; Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification
- PNP-PC – At least two years of pediatric nursing experience
- PMHNP – A telephone interview by invitation only, and a passion to help people with mental health disorders
- NM – At least one year of labor and delivery nursing experience or equivalent obstetrical clinical experience in the five years prior to application; Completion of a neonatal resuscitation program (NRP) and electronic fetal monitoring (EFM) course prior to population focus courses
Application materials include official transcripts, an essay including a personal statement, three professional letters of recommendation, a resume or CV, an oath of residency, and proof of RN licensure and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. No GRE or GMAT is required.
State Restrictions: The TTU MSN programs accept students from most states. However, at this time TTU does not accept students from Arizona, California, Louisiana, New York, Oregon, and Washington. Students in all other states are responsible to verify enrollment eligibility with the TTU School of Nursing as well as their State Board of Nursing.
Study Plan: MSN specializations begin in the Fall and Spring. Post-Master’s Certificate programs begin in the Fall, Spring, and Summer. The APRN MSN programs take approximately two and one-half to three years to complete, while the Post-Master’s Certificate programs take about two years to complete depending on courses transferred in.
The PMHNP specialization offers a full-time degree path of six semesters or a part-time path of nine semesters. The NM Specialization offers two, two and one-half, and three-year degree plans.
Students come to the Lubbock, TX campus for seven to eight days throughout the programs and clinicals take place at approved sites local to the student.
- MSN Curriculum: Core nursing courses for all specializations include Population Health Essentials for Advanced Nursing Practice; Scientific Foundations of Advanced Nursing Practice; Informatics, Quality, and Safety; and Leadership for Healthcare.
- Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP): This program requires the completion of 48 credits plus 525 clinical hours and six campus visits. Specialty courses include Mental Health in Primary Care; Diagnostic Methods for Advanced Nursing Practice; Foundations for Advanced Practice Nursing Role; Advanced Health Assessment; Pharmacotherapeutics for Nurses in Advanced Practice; Advanced Practice Nursing: Application of Pathophysiology; and Foundations of the Well Child. Population-focused courses include Primary Health Care I-II and Family Nurse Practitioner Practicum.
- Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (PNP-AC): This program requires the completion of 51 credits plus 630 clinical hours and includes five campus visits. Specialty courses include Critical Care Pharmacology; Advanced Health Assessment; Foundations for Advanced Practice Nursing Role; Diagnostic Methods for Advanced Nursing Practice; Pharmacotherapeutics for Nurses and Advanced Practice; and Advanced Practice Nursing: Application of Pathophysiology. Population-focused courses include Foundations of Acute Care; Foundations of the Well Child; and Pediatric Acute Care I-III.
- Pediatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (PNP-PC): This program requires completion of 49 credits plus 576 clinical hours and six campus visits. Specialty courses include Foundations for Advanced Practice Nursing Role; Diagnostic Methods for Advanced Nursing Practice; Advanced Health Assessment; Pharmacotherapeutics for Nurses and Advanced Practice; and Advanced Practice Nursing: Application of Pathophysiology. Population-focused courses include Foundations of the Well Child; Foundations for the Care of the Sick Child; Pediatric Primary Care I-II; and Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Practicum.
- Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP): This program requires the completion of 48 credits plus 525 clinical hours and six campus visits. Specialty courses include Critical Care Pharmacology; Diagnostic Methods for Advanced Nursing Practice; Foundations for Advanced Practice Nursing Role; Advanced Health Assessment; Pharmacotherapeutics for Nurses and Advanced Practice; and Advanced Practice Nursing: Application of Pathophysiology. Population-focused courses include Essentials of Acute Care; Adult-Gerontology Acute Care I-II; and Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Practicum.
- Nurse-Midwifery (NM): This program comprises 51 credits plus 787 clinical hours and four campus visits. Specialty courses include Foundations for Advanced Practice Nursing Role; Pharmacology for Women’s Health; Advanced Health Assessment; and Advanced Practice Nursing: Application of Pathophysiology. Population-focused courses include Nurse-Midwifery Practice I: Primary Care of Women; Nurse-Midwifery II: Gynecological Care; Nurse-Midwifery III: Antepartum and Postpartum Care; Nurse-Midwifery IV: Intrapartum Care; Nurse-Midwifery V: Neonatal Care; Nurse-Midwifery Integrated Clinical Practicum Level A-B; and Nurse-Midwifery Clinical Immersion Practicum.
- Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP): This program requires completion of 49 credits plus 576 clinical hours and six campus visits. Specialty courses may include Research for Advanced Nursing Practice; Advanced Health Assessment; Advanced Practice Nursing: Application of Pathophysiology; Evidence for Advanced Nursing Practice; Foundations for Advanced Practice Nursing Role; and Pharmacotherapeutics for Nurses in Advanced Practice. Population-focused courses may include Neuroscience and Epigenetics: A Lifespan Approach; Psychopharmacology; Telehealth and Rural Service Delivery; Population Health Essentials for Advanced Nursing Practice; Psychotherapeutic Modalities with Individuals, Families, and Groups; Diagnostics and Management I: Advanced Mental Health Assessment Across the Lifespan; Diagnostics and Management II: Evidence-Based Management of Adults with Mental Health Disorders; Diagnostics and Management III: Evidence-Based Management of Children and Adolescents with Mental Health Disorders; and Diagnostics and Management IV: Interprofessional Collaboration and Management of the Complex Psychiatric Patient Across the Lifespan.
Post-Master’s Certificates Curriculum: Applicants to the Post-Master’s Certificate programs may submit unofficial transcripts for evaluation by an admissions counselor to determine which classes can be transferred in and to determine which courses must still be completed. Generally, the 12 credits of core nursing courses listed for the MSN would be waived. The certificates may comprise up to 39 credits depending on the specialization:
- FNP – 36 credits, 525 clinical hours
- PNP-AC – 39 credits, 630 clinical hours
- PNP-PC – 37 credits, 576 clinical hours
- AGACNP – 36 credits, 525 clinical hours
- NM – 39 credits, 787 clinical hours
- PMHNP – 28 credits for students who already hold NP certification in another specialty; 29 credits for non-nurse practitioners, 576 clinical hours
Online Experience: TTU uses the Blackboard online Learning Management System (LMS). and courses are delivered asynchronously. Students have access to the Texas Tech Bookstore and an online section of the library dedicated to Worldwide eLearning students. There is also a dedicated librarian for online students. Other resources include admissions counseling, academic advising, faculty support, student support, student health services, 24/7 technical support, and career counseling.
On-Site Requirements: Texas Tech University online students come to the Lubbock, TX campus for four to seven visits throughout the programs for orientation and objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs). The number of campus visits depends on orientation and is listed above in the curriculum section. All other coursework is online and clinical preceptorships are completed at approved sites local to the student. OSCE dates are published about two months in advance to allow for travel arrangements.

Paying for the Texas Tech University Online Nursing Programs
In-state tuition for the MSN and certificate programs is $379 per credit plus fees. Out-of-state tuition is $787 per credit plus fees. Travel expenses for the campus visits are not included and should be figured into the total costs. Interested students should contact the graduate admissions department of the Texas Tech University School of Nursing for full and updated tuition costs.
Graduate students may be eligible for federal unsubsidized student loans through the FAFSA. MSN and certificate nursing students are also encouraged to inquire with their employers concerning a tuition reimbursement program or tuition discounts. As well, students may look into scholarships, grants, and loans from outside organizations.
Offering 6 NP specializations in both MSN and Post-Master's Certificates, the Texas Tech nursing programs offer very reasonable tuition, limited campus visits, and maximum flexibility with varying completion plans.
