#23 Best NP School Overall

#1 Best Program Variety

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) offers an online master of science in nursing (MSN) in every primary nurse practitioner specialization, as well as in nurse-midwifery, each with two entry points and four on-campus intensives. Applicants must hold a BSN for the traditional MSN program, or may enter the RN-to-MSN Bridge program with an associate’s degree in nursing (ADN) plus a non-nursing bachelor’s degree. Those who have already earned an MSN degree with a nurse practitioner (NP) or other advanced practice registered nursing (APRN) specialization may earn a second NP specialization by completing a post-master’s certificate, which UAB also offers in every major NP specialization area.

The following NP specializations are offered in both MSN and certificate pathways:

  • Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP)
  • Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (AGPCNP)
  • Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)
  • Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP)
  • Pediatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (PNP-PC)
  • Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (PNP-AC)
  • Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP)
  • Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner (WHNP)

Students admitted to the AGACNP specialty track may also elect to complete the registered nurse first assistant (RNFA) subspecialty as part of their program of study. This option is only available for those students admitted for a summer semester entrance.

The MSN nurse-midwifery pathway combines online didactic coursework with on-campus intensives and clinical immersions. Graduates are prepared to pass the national certification exam administered by the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB).

UAB evaluates each applicant’s transcript to ensure all foundational courses have been completed; foundational classes include advanced pathophysiology, pharmacology, assessment, therapeutics, and diagnostic reasoning for APRNs.

In addition, a bachelor of science in nursing to doctor of nursing practice (BSN-to-DNP) program is offered in all NP specialization areas. Students in the DNP program come to campus four times for the NP visits, plus a DNP orientation and one visit each year for DNP intensives. No MSN is granted through this program.

Graduates of each specialization are eligible to take the appropriate certification exams through the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board (PNCB), American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN), and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP).

With accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) across its baccalaureate, master’s, doctoral, and post-graduate APRN certificate programs, and additional specialized accreditation for its nurse-midwifery pathway by the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education (ACME), UAB ensures the highest standards of nursing education. The university itself is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). The University of Alabama at Birmingham is located in Birmingham, Alabama.

What to Expect from the University of Alabama at Birmingham Online Nurse Practitioner Programs

Admission Requirements: MSN and BSN-to-DNP applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) from an accredited program with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, or at a minimum in the last 60 undergraduate credits.

MSN bridge program applicants must have earned a non-nursing bachelor’s degree plus an associate’s degree in nursing from a regionally accredited institution with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, or at least in the final 60 semester hours of undergraduate study. GRE, GMAT, or GMAT test scores are required for those with less than a 3.2 GPA and must have been completed in the five years prior to application. A graduate exam waiver may be available for certain applicants.

Application materials include three letters of professional reference and official transcripts, as well as proof of unencumbered RN licensure. A prerequisite of a descriptive statistics course is required for the BSN applicants. Those pursuing the RN-to-MSN program must have successfully completed the following courses with a grade of “C” or higher in order to pursue study: human anatomy; human physiology; descriptive statistics; and microbiology.

Post-graduate APRN certificate pathway applicants must hold an MSN degree from a regionally accredited institution, unencumbered RN licensure in their state of clinical completion, a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, and APRN licensure in a different NP specialization than the desired second specialty. A GRE waiver is available for those with a graduate degree with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Certain restrictions apply for GRE waivers.

Students applying to the AGACNP with the RNFA track must have at least two of the three required letters of reference from individuals attesting to the applicant’s experience as an RN and the applicant’s knowledge, judgment, and skills specific to perioperative patient care.

State Restrictions: UAB accepts students from most states into the graduate nursing programs. However, the following states do not currently have approval: California, Colorado, Delaware, Idaho, Iowa, Massachusetts, Missouri, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, West Virginia, and Wyoming. Students outside of Alabama should always check with their State Board of Nursing to make sure the UAB nursing programs meet state licensure requirements. As well, applicants should confirm with UAB’s School of Nursing to make sure they are eligible for study.

Study Plan: The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Nursing offers flexible study plans supporting working professionals in all NP tracks. Each program combines synchronous online coursework with required on-campus orientation and annual intensives.

The MSN program with NP specialties begins in the summer and fall and takes two years to complete. The BSN-to-DNP program with specialties can be completed in nine to 10 semesters. The post-graduate APRN certificate pathway begins in the summer only as cohorts and can be completed in four semesters.

All BSN-to-DNP NP pathways are completed as part-time programs over nine to ten consecutive semesters. The curriculum comprises 79 total credits. Each student attends an initial on-campus orientation and a required annual intensive.

MSN tracks are also delivered part-time, generally completed over six to seven semesters. The curriculum includes 45 credits for NP pathways and 54 credits for nurse-midwifery, combining synchronous online classes with on-campus intensives.

Students in the RN-to-MSN pathway begin with three bridge courses in nursing concepts, population health, and leadership development before entering the MSN study plan corresponding to their chosen NP concentration.

The certificate pathways are completed via part-time study and require 27 credits, with coursework customized according to a GAP analysis of previously completed advanced practice content.

MSN Core Curriculum: The MSN pathway comprises 45 credits. Core courses for the MSN program include interprofessional leadership roles and financial considerations of professional practice; advanced pathophysiology; evidence-based practice for advanced-level nursing; pharmacology and therapeutics; population health for advanced-level nursing; advanced health assessment & introduction to diagnostic reasoning; and a focus on advanced nursing specialization (NCA).

Online students also have help from faculty and advisors.

On-Site Requirements: Students in UAB’s online nursing programs must attend an on-campus orientation and annual intensives. Tuition is calculated based on credits, at the published tuition rate. Rates may change, so please check here for the latest tuition information. For programs with variable tuition rates, we use the rates for part-time students. “Resident” and “non-resident” refer to the student’s school-recognized state residency status. Tuition number represents the cost of tuition for the entire program, not per semester or year. Estimated total tuition does not include additional fees.
