Walden University Online Nurse Practitioner Programs – AGNP, FNP, PMHNP, PNP

School Logo

Walden University is among the top three providers of nursing education in the United States. Walden offers CCNE-accredited online MSN and DNP degree programs as well as a Post-Master’s Certificate in Nursing with the following five nurse practitioner specializations so you can focus on the unique healthcare needs of specific populations:

  • Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP)
  • Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (AGPCNP)
  • Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)
  • Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP)
  • Pediatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (PNP-PC)

Walden’s Practicum Pledge™ offers enhanced practicum support to give you added confidence as you start your degree journey. Students in the MSN and DNP programs benefit from a collaborative, dedicated process to help them find a right-fit, on-time practicum match. After you register for Walden Practicum Pledge™ (along with other requirements), if you can’t identify a site and preceptor, our dedicated Field Placement Team partners with you to secure your site and preceptor to help you find a match.

Walden’s online MSN program offers an ADN bridge entry point (RN to MSN track) and a BSN entry point (BSN to MSN Track). In addition, an Accelerated Into Master’s (AIM) option is available in our RN to BSN program for those holding a hospital diploma or associate degree in nursing who want to earn their bachelor’s degree while also earning credits toward an MSN degree. Students complete coursework 100% online and clinicals are completed at approved facilities local to the student.

The DNP program offers a BSN entry point for most specializations as well as an MSN entry point, with a difference of 10 quarter credits between the two options. Again, coursework is 100% online with local preceptorships.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) predicts that the demand for nurse practitioners will increase 45% from 2022 to 2032, much faster than the average for all occupations. Nurse practitioners are and will continue to be in high demand due to the decrease in family practice doctors across the country.

To help meet this demand, Walden University employs expert instructors who all hold doctoral degrees to teach its graduate nursing courses. Nurse practitioner students gain practical experience in a professional healthcare setting to apply learned knowledge via a clinical preceptorship.

Adult-gerontology nurse practitioners serve patients from adolescence to old age. Acute care NPs focus on the care of acutely ill adult patients in various critical care settings, including intensive care units and surgical units.

AGACNPs work with other healthcare professionals to develop care plans and manage patient care. Graduates of this specialization will be prepared to take the Adult-Gerontology Acute Care NP certification exams through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN).

Adult-gerontology primary care NPs work with adults in primary care, home, hospital, and long-term care settings. They also work with care teams to create care plans and manage patient health. AGPCNP graduates will be prepared to take the Adult-Gerontology Primary Care certification exams through ANCC and AANPCB.

Family nurse practitioners (FNPs) and psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioners (PMHNPs) serve populations across the lifespan from childhood to old age.

Pediatric nurse practitioners (PNPs) serve infants, children, adolescents, and young adults from birth to age 21.

FNPs and PNPs are prepared to assess, evaluate, diagnose, and treat acute and chronic health conditions. They focus on holistic healthcare through preventive medicine and healthcare education for their patients and communities. FNPs and PNPs may work in long-term care facilities, hospitals, government agencies, primary care clinics, community health facilities, and other family practice settings.

Graduates of the FNP specialization will be prepared to take the family nurse practitioner certification exam through the ANCC.

PNP-PC graduates are eligible to take the Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner – Primary Care (CPNP-PC) exam through the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board (PNCB).

PMHNPs work with those experiencing mental health issues and illnesses, assessing, diagnosing, and treating patients across the lifespan. They may recommend or provide counseling, psychotherapy, and addiction or disorder treatment, and prescribe medications. PMHNPs may work in hospitals, schools, counseling facilities, treatment centers, and other mental health organizations.

Graduates of the PMHNP program will be prepared to take the Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner certification exams through the ANCC and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP).

Walden University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). The online MSN and DNP programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Walden University is located in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
