Boise State University Online Adult-Gerontology NP Programs – AGPCNP, AGACNP

Boise State University offers a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program with an Adult-Gerontology Primary Care (AGPCNP) and Adult-Gerontology Acute Care (AGACNP) Nurse Practitioner focus. Additionally, a Post-Master’s Certificate is offered with both AGPCNP and AGPCNP specializations. The Post-Master’s Certificate programs require two campus intensives during the summer and the MSN programs require three campus intensives. All other coursework is online and clinicals are completed at approved facilities local to the student.

Adult-gerontology primary care nurse practitioners (AGPCNPs) specialize in working with adults with a focus on older adults. Work settings may include primary care clinics, long-term care situations such as nursing homes and rehabilitation centers, hospitals, and home health care situations. AGPCNPs diagnose and treat acute and chronic illnesses, create long-term care plans, and promote health education and disease prevention. Graduates of this specialization are eligible to take the AGPCNP certification exam.

Adult-gerontology acute care nurse practitioners (AGACNPs) also focus on working with older adults, however, settings include intensive care units, surgical units, and critical care units. AGACNPs diagnose and treat acute and complex illnesses, and typically work with medical care teams to collaborate and create an effective treatment plan. Graduates of this track are eligible to take the AGACNP certification exam.

Boise State University operates from a specific framework throughout the nursing curriculum. The five areas of focus include clinical reasoning and critical inquiry, experiential learning, communication, global worldview, and professionalism and leadership. Prospective students for the MSN programs must have at least one year of direct patient care experience working in settings and with adult patients in their desired area of specialty.

Graduates of the AGNP nursing programs will be eligible to sit for the national certification exams for their chosen specialization through the American Nurses Credentialing Corporation (ANCC) or the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). Boise State University is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU). The nursing programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Boise State University is located in Boise, Idaho.
