Husson University Online Nurse Practitioner Programs – FNP, PMHNP, AGACNP

The College of Health and Pharmacy School of Nursing at Husson University offers an online Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and Post-Master’s Certificates with three specializations: Family and Community Nurse Practitioner (FCNP), Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), and Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP). Most coursework is completed online with two 1-week summer campus immersions at the Bangor, Maine campus, and clinical experiences take place at approved facilities local to the student.

Husson University faculty are experts in their field, continuing to practice their profession while teaching clinical courses. The family nurse practitioner (FNP) track prepares graduates to serve populations across the lifespan. Duties may include assessing, diagnosing, and treating chronic and acute illnesses, prescribing medications, recommending further services, collaborating with other healthcare professionals, and educating the community on healthcare habits and preventive medicine.

FNP program graduates are eligible to take the FNP certification exams through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). Family nurse practitioners may work in hospitals, primary care clinics, emergency centers, hospices, government institutions, long-term health care facilities, urgent care facilities, research organizations, and home health care situations.

The PMHNP track prepares graduates to provide cost-effective mental health care to patients across the lifespan, especially those in underserved populations. The nature of the program blends psychosocial and neurobiological sciences into what is termed a biopsychosocial approach. This approach prepares psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners to meet the needs of the person as a whole rather than addressing just one facet of a person. Graduates of this program are eligible to sit for the Family Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner ANCC Certification Examination. PMHNPs may work in psychiatric hospitals and clinics, counseling centers, rehabilitation centers, in-patient treatment programs, schools, long-term healthcare facilities, and government facilities.

The AGACNP track prepares nurses to care for adolescents through adults and again adults in acute care settings in healthcare. AGACNPs diagnose illnesses, create holistic treatment plans, collaborate with care teams, and seek to improve outcomes in critically ill individuals. Adult-Gerontology NPs may work in intensive care units (ICUs), trauma centers, long-term care facilities, specialty clinics, and acute care units in hospitals. AGACNP track graduates are eligible to take the AGACNP certification exams through the AACN or the ANCC.

Husson University is accredited by the New England Commission on Higher Education (NECHE). The graduate nursing programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Husson University is located in Bangor, Maine.
