Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing (JHSON) offers an online Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) with BSN and MSN entry points and seven nursing specializations. The following specializations are offered:

In addition, Post-Master’s Certificates are offered in the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) track and the Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (PNP-AC) track. Coursework is delivered 100% online with varying campus immersion requirements depending on the path chosen. Students also complete practicums at approved facilities local to the student.
The online DNP program with immersions seeks to prepare nurses to practice as nurse practitioners or clinical nurse specialists covering specific populations with the highest level of nursing education possible. All DNP students complete a scholarly project along with the immersions and practicums. Those who obtained a master of science in nursing (MSN) degree from Johns Hopkins may transfer up to 16 credits to the DNP program. Those who earned an MSN from another institution should contact the admissions team at the JHU School of Nursing to determine transfer eligibility.
The Adult-Gerontological Critical Care Clinical Nurse Specialist (AGCC-CNS) covers patient populations that include young adults, middle-aged, and older adults. This track prepares students to serve in critical care situations as well as with patients with chronic and acute illnesses. A special focus is the collaborative nature of the work, advancing the care of patients and their families through communication and planning with a healthcare team. In addition, AGCC-CNSs focus on ethical decision-making in light of critical care situations. Graduates are eligible to apply for the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) Adult-Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist certification.
The Adult-Gerontological Health Clinical Nurse Specialist (AG-CNS) also covers populations including young adults through the elderly. AG-CNSs work to improve the quality of care for patients and their families in acute and chronic care situations. Collaboration is also key in this specialty as well as evidence-based, ethical decision making. Graduates of this track may take certification exams through the ANCC or the Adult-Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) certification program.
The Pediatric Critical Care Clinical Nurse Specialist (PCC-CNS) works with infants, children, and adolescents in acute, chronic, and critical care situations, providing ethical, evidence-based decisions and recommendations. Clinical nurse specialists conduct research, evaluate the data, and apply the evidence to decision-making. Collaboration between the CNS, patient, family, and other care team members is critical to improved patient outcomes. Graduates of this track may apply for certification exams through the ANCC or the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) and a Pediatric Clinical Nurse Specialist.
The Adult/Gerontological Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (AG-PCNP) track educates students to serve in primary care settings with patients from young adults to the elderly. AG-PCNPs treat acute and chronic conditions and focus on health assessment, health education, and disease prevention. Graduates are eligible to take certification exams for Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner through the ANCC or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP).
The Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) track covers the same populations as the AG-PCNP with the addition of pediatric populations (infants, children, and adolescents). FNPs work in primary care settings treating acute and chronic illnesses and also focusing on preventive healthcare through education, counseling, and health promotion. Graduates are eligible to take certification exams through the ANCC or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) Certification Program.
The Pediatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (PNP-PC) track has a similar focus to adult-gerontology and family nurse practitioners, however this specialization solely covers birth through adolescence. Graduates of this track are eligible to take certification exams through the ANCC or the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board (PNCB).
The PMHNP certificate allows advanced practice nurses to serve children and adults with mental health conditions through an integrated mental health care focus. PMHNPs provide short- and long-term treatment and recovery services, collaborate with health care teams, and work in both primary care and behavioral health care settings. Graduates are eligible to apply for PMHNP certification through the ANCC.
The PNP-AC certificate is designed for Primary Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioners who wish to expand their role to the acute care of children. PNP-ACs are trained to treat pediatric acute and chronic conditions as well as critical care conditions. Graduates will be eligible to take the pediatric acute care certification exam through the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board (PNCB).
Nurse practitioners and clinical nurse specialists serve in a variety of settings including nurseries, hospitals, private clinics, schools, long-term care facilities, behavioral health, and home health care settings. Johns Hopkins University is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). The nursing programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). What to Expect from the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing Online NP Programs
DNP Admission Requirements: Applicants to the JHSON DNP program must have a BSN or entry-level MSN degree depending on the entry point chosen, from an accredited institution, with a minimum GPA of 3.0. All applicants must hold a current, unencumbered RN license for their state. One year of full-time RN experience is preferred, but not required. Application materials include evidence of a current RN license, three letters of recommendation, a current resume or CV, official transcripts, a goal statement, and proof of English language proficiency if English is not the applicant’s first language. Students who are moved forward by the admissions committee will participate in an interview with faculty. GRE test scores are accepted but are not required.
Students must have completed undergraduate statistics with a grade of B or better.
PMHNP Post-Master’s Certificate Admission Requirements: Applicants must hold an MSN or doctoral nursing degree from an accredited institution, with a minimum GPA of 3.0. All applicants must hold a current, unencumbered RN license, be certified and licensed as a nurse practitioner, provide evidence of at least 500 clinical hours in a nurse practitioner role, and have one year of nurse practitioner work experience. State Restrictions: Johns Hopkins University accepts students from most states, however, applicants outside of Maryland should check with their admissions counselor to confirm eligibility. Johns Hopkins students cannot conduct clinical activities in the following states: Louisiana, New York, and Oregon. Prospective students should contact the licensing board of their specific state of residence to determine if the program meets state requirements for NP licensure.
Study Plan: Johns Hopkins University offers three or four-year plans for completing the DNP and students must complete the degrees within six years. Only full-time plans are offered and students should not expect to work while going through the program except possibly the first year of the 4-year plan. Students move through the DNP three and four-year plans as a cohort with other students in the same specialty. Three to seven campus immersions are included depending on the track chosen and students complete 1,008 clinical hours locally.
The Post-Master’s PMHNP and PNP-AC Certificates may be completed in as little as three semesters. Students complete a minimum of 448 clinical hours for the certificate programs. Start dates for all programs land in the Fall, Spring, and Summer.
BSN to DNP Core Curriculum: The DNP nurse practitioner and clinical nurse specialist tracks comprise 75 to 88 credits and include 1,008 hours of clinicals. All specialties take the following core courses Advanced Physiology/Pathophysiology; Advanced Health Assessment and Measurement; Clinical Pharmacology; Diagnostic Skills and Procedures for Advanced Practice Nursing; Biostatistics for Evidence-Based Practice; The Research Process and Its Application to Evidence-Based Practice; Philosophical, Theoretical and Ethical Basis of Advanced Nursing Practice; Health Promotion and Risk Reduction Across the Lifespan.
In addition, all specializations take the following: Advanced Nursing Health Policy; Organizational and Systems Leadership for Quality Care; Nursing Inquiry for Evidence-Based Practice; Translating Evidence into Practice; Health Finance; Analysis and Evaluation of Individual and Population Health Data; Health Information Systems and Patient Care Technologies; Clinical Data Management; Problem Identification; Project Development/Implementation/Evaluation; and DNP Practicum.
BSN to DNP Clinical Nurse Specialist Tracks Curriculum: Courses include Clinical Judgement I-III and Clinical Practicums I-IV.
BSN to DNP Nurse Practitioner Tracks Curriculum: Courses include Clinical Reasoning I-V and Clinical Practicums I-V. The Dual PNP-PC/AC track includes some courses from both the pediatric track and acute care track.
MSN to DNP Curriculum: Up to 16 credits can be transferred from the Johns Hopkins MSN (entry into nursing) Program. Students who earned an entry-level MSN from another institution should check with the admissions department of Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing to inquire about credit transfers. Courses allowed for transfer differ depending on the specialty track chosen. The rest of the curriculum follows the BSN to DNP courses listed above.
Post-Master’s PMHNP Certificate Curriculum: The Post-Master’s PMHNP Certificate requires a minimum of 17 credits and 448 to 500 clinical hours. If students have not completed Advanced (Lifespan) Health Assessment, these courses may be required: Health Assessment and Measurement: Adult/Geriatric Variations and Health Assessment and Measurement: Pediatric Variations. Specialty courses include Neurobiology of Mental Disorders; Clinical Psychopharmacology; Psychotherapeutic Frameworks and Modalities; Differential Diagnosis of Mental Disorders; and Integrated Care I-II. Students also complete two practicums: Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Practicum: Adult/Geriatric and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Practicum: Peds/Family. Specific requirements are based on a gap analysis.
Post-Master’s PNP-AC Certificate Curriculum: The Post-Master’s PNP-AC Certificate requires a minimum of 13 credits and is built on previous education as a Primary Care Pediatric NP. Courses include Pediatric Acute Care I-III and three Pediatric Acute Care Practicums involving 56 to 224 clinical hours each. Specific requirements are based on a gap analysis.
Online Experience: JHU utilizes Blackboard as its online Learning Management System. Courses are mainly asynchronous in a collaborative online learning environment. Formats include video presentations, discussion boards, conferencing, wikis, clinical logs, virtual media, reflective assignments, and assessments. Students move through with a cohort of their chosen track and three or four-year plan. Local online students living in Baltimore have the opportunity to participate in a clinical learning experience with a Johns Hopkins partner. Online students have access to admissions and career counseling, 24/7 technical support, academic advising, faculty office hours, tutoring services, and networking support.
On-Site Requirements: Johns Hopkins students come to the Baltimore, Maryland campus for immersions a set number of times depending on their specialization.
- On-Campus Immersions by Program:
- DNP – Clinical Nurse Specialist Specializations – Students come to campus for three mandatory onsite immersions and two optional onsite immersions. These visits seek to support students in the development of their DNP scholarly project.
- DNP – Adult Gerontological Primary Care (AG-PCNP), Family (FNP), Pediatric Primary Care (PNP-PC), and Pediatric Dual Primary/Acute Care (PNP-PC/AC) Nurse Practitioner Specializations – Students come to campus for one on-site course immersion per semester for seven semesters for a total of seven visits. These immersions offer opportunities for students to network with faculty, peers, and alumni, as well as practice, advanced clinical nursing skills in the School of Nursing simulation center.
- Post-Master’s Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) Certificate – No on-site visits are required. Practicums are completed locally.
- Post-Master’s Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (PNP-AC) Certificate – One on-site immersion for a simulation takes place during this program. Dates are posted on the Johns Hopkins program website.
Paying for the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing Online NP Programs
The Johns Hopkins School of Nursing charges a slightly higher tuition for its NP degree programs than it does for its post-master’s NP certificates. Tuition is listed in the program tables below, and does not include additional fees. Students should budget extra for travel expenses for the campus immersions, if applicable to their program. Prospective students should contact the graduate admissions department of the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing for cost clarifications and updates.
JHSON graduate students may be eligible for merit-based scholarships awarded to DNP students who show strong leadership skills, exceptional academic ability, remarkable community service, or other strengths and accomplishments. Scholarships range from $5,000 to $25,000 for full-time DNP students. Other scholarships, grants, and programs include the School of Nursing Areas of Excellence Scholarship of $45,000 for up to six scholars, Johns Hopkins $5,000 Nursing Grant, Returned Peace Corps Volunteers Scholarship and Fellows Program, the Conway Scholarship, and the Nurse Faculty Loan Program (NFLP). Graduate students may also be eligible for federal unsubsidized student loans in accordance with the FAFSA. Students may also check with their employers about a tuition reimbursement program or with outside entities for other scholarships and grants.
