Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing (JHSON) offers an online DNP with BSN and MSN entry points and six nursing specializations. The following specializations are offered:

In addition, a post-master’s certificate is also offered in the psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) track. Coursework is delivered 100 percent online with varying campus immersion requirements depending on the path chosen. Students also complete practicums at approved facilities local to the student.
The online DNP program with immersions seeks to prepare nurses to practice as nurse practitioners covering specific populations with the highest level of nursing education possible. All DNP students complete a scholarly project along with the immersions and practicums. Those who obtained a master of science in nursing (MSN) degree from Johns Hopkins may transfer up to 16 credits to the DNP program. Those who earned an MSN from another institution should contact the admissions team at the JHU School of Nursing to determine transfer eligibility.
The adult-gerontological acute care nurse practitioner (AG-ACNP) track prepares students to diagnose and manage acute and chronic health problems in adult and older adult patients. The program develops skills in psychosocial and physical assessment, disease prevention and health promotion, clinical decision-making, diagnostic testing, medication prescribing, and other therapies. In addition to advanced clinical training, this DNP track prepares graduates to lead cross-professional teams and improve healthcare through innovation, evidence-based practice, and leadership. Graduates are eligible to apply for adult-gerontological acute care nurse practitioner certification through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN).
The adult-gerontological primary care nurse practitioner (AG-PCNP) track educates students to serve in primary care settings with patients from young adults to the elderly. AG-PCNPs treat acute and chronic conditions and focus on health assessment, health education, and disease prevention. Graduates are eligible to take certification exams for adult-gerontology primary care nurse practitioner through the ANCC or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP).
The family nurse practitioner (FNP) track covers the same populations as the AG-PCNP with the addition of pediatric populations (infants, children, and adolescents). FNPs work in primary care settings treating acute and chronic illnesses and also focusing on preventive healthcare through education, counseling, and health promotion. Graduates are eligible to take certification exams through the ANCC or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) Certification Program.
The pediatric primary care nurse practitioner (PNP-PC) track has a similar focus to adult-gerontology and family nurse practitioners; however, this specialization solely covers birth through adolescence. Graduates of this track are eligible to take certification exams through the ANCC or the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board (PNCB).
The pediatric dual primary/acute care nurse practitioner (PNP-PC/AC) track prepares students to provide both primary and acute care to pediatric patients. Graduates are prepared to take national certification examinations through the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board (PNCB).
The psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) track prepares students to manage and diagnose chronic and acute mental health problems across the lifespan. Students learn therapeutic and medicinal interventions while developing skills in psychosocial and physical assessment, clinical decision-making, health promotion, and disease prevention. Graduates are eligible to apply for American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) certification as board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNP-BC).
The PMHNP certificate allows advanced practice nurses to serve children and adults with mental health conditions through an integrated mental health care focus. PMHNPs provide short- and long-term treatment and recovery services, collaborate with health care teams, and work in both primary care and behavioral health care settings. Graduates are eligible to apply for PMHNP certification through the ANCC.
Nurse practitioners and clinical nurse specialists serve in a variety of settings including nurseries, hospitals, private clinics, schools, long-term care facilities, behavioral health, and home health care settings. Johns Hopkins University is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). The nursing programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). What to Expect from the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing Online NP Programs
DNP Admission Requirements: Applicants to the Johns Hopkins University online DNP programs must have a BSN or entry-level MSN degree, depending on the entry point chosen, from an ACEN- or CCNE-accredited college or university, with a minimum GPA of 3.0. All applicants must hold a current, unencumbered RN license for their state. One year of full-time RN experience is preferred, but not required. Application materials include evidence of a current RN license, three letters of recommendation, a current resume or CV, official transcripts, a goal statement, and proof of English language proficiency if English is not the applicant’s first language. Students who are moved forward by the admissions committee will participate in an interview with faculty. GRE test scores are accepted but are not required.
Students must have completed undergraduate statistics with a grade of B or better.
PMHNP Post-Master’s Certificate Admission Requirements: Applicants must hold an MSN or doctoral nursing degree from an accredited institution, with a minimum GPA of 3.0. All applicants must hold a current, unencumbered RN license, be certified and licensed as a nurse practitioner, provide evidence of at least 500 clinical hours in a nurse practitioner role, and have one year of nurse practitioner work experience. Prospective students must also demonstrate a commitment to nursing practice, community service, and professionalism. Application materials include three letters of recommendation, a current resume or CV, official transcripts, a goal statement, and proof of English language proficiency if English is not the applicant’s first language.
Prerequisites include advanced (lifespan) physical health assessment, advanced pharmacology, and advanced pathophysiology. Students who are moved forward by the admissions committee will participate in an interview with faculty.
State Restrictions: Johns Hopkins University accepts students from most states; however, applicants outside of Maryland should check with their admissions counselor to confirm eligibility. Johns Hopkins students cannot conduct clinical activities in the following states: Louisiana and New York. Prospective students should contact the licensing board of their specific state of residence to determine if the program meets state requirements for NP licensure.
Study Plan: The Johns Hopkins University DNP programs can be completed in three years through online coursework with on-site immersions. The AGACNP DNP track comprises 70 credits, 840 clinical hours, and 160 project practicum hours. The AGPCNP DNP track comprises 74 credits, 960 clinical hours, and 160 DNP practicum hours.
The FNP DNP track comprises 76 credits, 960 family primary care clinical hours, and 160 DNP practicum hours. The PNP-PC DNP track comprises 74.5 credits, 840 clinical hours, and 160 project practicum hours. The PNP-PC/AC DNP track comprises 76 credits, 960 clinical hours, and 160 project practicum hours. The PMHNP DNP track comprises 76 credits, 1,040 clinical hours, and 160 project practicum hours.
The post-master’s psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner certificate is offered online and can be completed in as few as three semesters. The certificate comprises 17 credits and 500 total clinical hours.
BSN to DNP Core Curriculum: The Johns Hopkins University DNP curriculum includes common core courses across the nurse practitioner concentrations. MSN to DNP Curriculum: Up to 16 credits can be transferred from the Johns Hopkins MSN (entry into nursing) Program. Students who earned an entry-level MSN from another institution should check with the admissions department of Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing to inquire about credit transfers. Courses allowed for transfer differ depending on the specialty track chosen. The rest of the curriculum follows the BSN to DNP courses listed above.
Post-Master’s PMHNP Certificate Curriculum: The post-master’s PMHNP certificate comprises 17 credits. Specialty courses include neurobiology of mental disorders; clinical psychopharmacology; differential diagnosis of mental disorders; psychotherapeutic frameworks and modalities; clinical reasoning: psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner practicum: adult/gero; clinical reasoning: psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner practicum: peds/family; clinical practicum: psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner practicum: adult/gero; clinical practicum: psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner practicum: peds/family; and integrated care. The certificate includes 500 total clinical hours, with 250 clinical hours in each clinical practicum.
Online Experience: JHU utilizes Canvas as its online Learning Management System. Courses are mainly asynchronous in a collaborative online learning environment. Formats include video presentations, discussion boards, conferencing, wikis, clinical logs, virtual media, reflective assignments, and assessments. Students move through with a cohort of their chosen track and a three- or four-year plan. Local online students living in Baltimore have the opportunity to participate in a clinical learning experience with a Johns Hopkins partner. Online students have access to admissions and career counseling, 24/7 technical support, academic advising, faculty office hours, tutoring services, and networking support.
On-Site Requirements: The Johns Hopkins University DNP concentrations are offered online with course immersions. Certain semesters require students to attend on-site immersions. Students also complete clinical hours and project practicum hours as part of their selected concentration. The post-master’s certificate is delivered online, with preceptors at clinical sites near the student, and includes 500 total clinical hours.
Paying for the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing Online NP Programs
The Johns Hopkins School of Nursing charges a slightly higher tuition for its NP degree programs than it does for its post-master’s NP certificates. Tuition is listed in the program tables below and does not include additional fees. Students should budget extra for travel expenses for the campus immersions, if applicable to their program. JHSON graduate students may be eligible for merit-based scholarships awarded to DNP students who show strong leadership skills, exceptional academic ability, remarkable community service, or other strengths and accomplishments. Scholarships range from $5,000 to $25,000 for full-time DNP students. Graduate students may also be eligible for federal unsubsidized student loans in accordance with the FAFSA. Students may also check with their employers about a tuition reimbursement program or with outside entities for other scholarships and grants.
