#16 Best Overall NP School

#2 Best Program Variety

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) offers an online Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) in every primary nurse practitioner specialization, each with two entry points and four on-campus intensives. Applicants must hold a BSN for the traditional MSN program or may enter the RN to MSN Bridge program with an associate’s degree in nursing (ADN) plus a non-nursing bachelor’s. Those who have already earned an MSN degree with a nurse practitioner (NP) or other advanced practice registered nursing (APRN) specialization may earn a second NP specialization by completing a post-master’s certificate, which UAB also offers in every major NP specialization area.

The following NP specializations are offered in both MSN and certificate pathways:

  • Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP)
  • Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (AGPCNP)
  • Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)
  • Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP)
  • Pediatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (PNP-PC)
  • Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (PNP-AC)
  • Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP)
  • Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner (WHNP)
  • Dual Pediatric Acute and Primary Care NP (PNP-AC/PC)

Adding to the great flexibility of pathways to pursue, UAB also offers what are called subspecialties for nurse practitioners. Subspecialty options include:

  • Nurse Educator (NE)
  • Advanced Forensic Nurse
  • Advanced Palliative Care Nurse Practitioner
  • Emergency Nurse Practitioner (ENP)
  • Registered Nurse First Assist (RNFA)

These may be pursued as part of an MSN program or separately in a stand-alone fashion with prior completion of an MSN degree. UAB evaluates each applicant’s transcript to ensure all foundational courses have been completed; foundational classes include Advanced Pathophysiology, Pharmacology, Assessment, Therapeutics, and Diagnostic Reasoning for APRNs.

In addition, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing to Doctor of Nursing Practice (BSN to DNP) program is offered in all specializations except the dual pediatric acute and primary care track. Students in the DNP program come to campus four times for the NP visits plus a DNP orientation and one visit each year for DNP intensives. No MSN is granted through this program.

BSN-prepared nurses may apply to the Registered Nurse First Assist subspecialty if they have at least two years or operating room (OR) experience, and must submit verification of CNOR certification.

Graduates of each specialization are eligible to take the appropriate certification exams through the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board (PNCB), American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN), and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP).

The University of Alabama at Birmingham is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). The MSN and certificate programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The pediatric nursing programs are approved by the Pediatric Certification Board (PCNB). In addition, UAB is in compliance with the National Certification Corporation (NCC) for the NNP and WHNP programs. The University of Alabama at Birmingham is located in Birmingham, Alabama.

What to Expect from the University of Alabama at Birmingham Online NP Programs

Admission Requirements: MSN and BSN to DNP applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) from an accredited program with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, or at a minimum in the last 60 undergraduate credits.

MSN Bridge program applicants must have earned a non-nursing bachelor’s degree plus an associate’s degree in nursing from a regionally accredited institution with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, or at the least in the final 60 semester hours of undergraduate study. GRE, GMAT, or MAT test scores are required for those with less than a 3.2 GPA and must have been completed in the five years prior to application. A graduate exam waiver may be available for certain applicants.

Application materials include three letters of professional reference and official transcripts as well as proof of unencumbered RN licensure. A prerequisite of a descriptive statistics course is required for the BSN applicants. Those pursuing the RN to MSN program must have successfully completed the following courses with a grade of “C” or higher in order to pursue study: Human Anatomy; Human Physiology; Descriptive Statistics; and Microbiology.

Post-Graduate APRN Certificate Pathway applicants must hold an MSN degree from a regionally accredited institution, unencumbered RN licensure in their state of clinical completion, a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, and APRN licensure in a different NP specialization than the desired second specialty. A GRE waiver is available for those with a graduate degree with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Certain restrictions apply for GRE waivers.

Subspecialty applicants must follow the application requirements of the MSN or certificate program to which they are applying, unless they meet the MSN requirements for application without graduate study at UAB in another program (or BSN entry for the RNFA subspecialty).

State Restrictions: UAB accepts students from most states into the graduate nursing programs. However, the following states do not currently have approval: Colorado, Delaware, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and West Virginia. Students outside of Alabama should always check with their State Board of Nursing to make sure the UAB nursing programs meet state licensure requirements. As well, applicants should confirm with UAB’s School of Nursing to make sure they are eligible for study.

Study Plan: The MSN program with NP specialties begins in the Summer and Fall and takes two years to complete. The BSN to DNP program with specialties can be completed in 10 semesters. The Post-Graduate APRN Certificate Pathway begins in the Summer only as cohorts and can be completed in four semesters. The subspecialty programs are as follows:

Tuition is calculated based on credits, at the published tuition rate. Rates may change, so please check here for the latest tuition information. For programs with variable tuition rates, we use the rates for part-time students. “Resident” and “non-resident” refer to the student’s school-recognized state residency status. Tuition number represents the cost of tuition for the entire program, not per semester or year. Estimated total tuition does not include additional fees.
